ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

Product obtained by the prolonged autoxidation of pyrogallol in the presence of copper(II) ions was characterized by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The presence of both paramagnetic copper(II) ions and organic free radicals in obtained autoxidation product was deduced from room temperature ESR spectrum which is similar to the ESR spectra of copper(II) ions complexed humic acids. Existence of two distinct types of copper(II) ion binding sites in the autoxidation product was assumed in order to obtain satisfactory computer simulation of copper(II) ions ESR spectrum. Prevalent ionic bonding of copper(II) ions in polymeric matrix with tetrahedral distortion at copper(II) ion binding sites and small to negligible exchange interactions between them was indicated by the parameters obtained from computer simulation of copper(II) ions ESR spectrum. ESR linewidth of organic radical(s) signal was larger and its g-value smaller than the values characteristic for humic acids due to the dipolar interactions with paramagnetic copper(II) ions.
