ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:
Assessing the sorption capacity and mechanisms of calcium carbonate interaction with nickel (Ni(II)) ions helps evaluate the potential risks associated with heavy metal contamination in natural systems and designing mitigation approaches for contaminated environments. In this study, the sorption of Ni2+ was investigated using shells of Arca noae (AN) species as a source of biogenic carbonate, mainly aragonite. The sorption of Ni2+ decreased significantly with an increase in the size of AN particles. The interaction of AN with Ni2+ solutions led to the rise in pH and the release of Ca2+ ions. X-ray diffraction analysis of the Ni-saturated AN sample revealed the absence of newly precipitated crystalline phases. The results suggest that the sorption of Ni2+ occurs via several surface reactions, including inner-sphere complexes formation, coprecipitation, or re-crystallization. The 0.045-0.125 mm AN fraction showed a maximum sorption capacity of 18.3 mg/g.
