ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

Increasing environmental pollution and the concept of sustainable development have both caused increased ecological awareness, which altogether have contributed to the development of new effective, ecologically and economically acceptable technologies for decontamination of contaminated spheres of environment, such as engineered bioremediation. This paper presents the engineered bioremediation of aquifers (groundwater and sediments) in the locality of the New Belgrade heating plant. In the process, which lasted for 12 months, aquifer contaminated by various petroleum derivatives was treated by in situ. The treatment was carried out by a bipolar model with groundwater recirculation, by combination of extraction and injection wells. During process, the total petroleum hydrocarbon content in groundwater was reduced dramatically (98%). In the same time, the total petroleum hydrocarbon content in the sediment decreased by 93% of the initial level.
