ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CH), a reduced cerebral blood flow, is a significant factor in the development and progression of various neurodegenerative diseases for which adequate treatments are often lacking. To investigate the neuroprotective effects of the steroid hormone progesterone (P4) in a state of CH, we divided male Wistar rats into three groups: control group – rats treated with vehicle (flaxseed oil) and groups consisting of rats subjected to permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (2VO) and treated with either flaxseed oil or P4 for seven days. We isolated the prefrontal cortex (PFC) to investigate the effects of P4 on the protein expression of progesterone receptors A and B (PRA and PRB). Obtained results suggest that CH induced a decrease in protein expression of PRA and PRB and that treatment with P4 restored them to control values. This study sheds light on the potential neuroprotective P4 mechanism in the repeated regiment of administration against CH.
