САЖЕТАК /ABSTRACT:

The energy conversion efficiency of the electrochemical reduction of benzalaldehyde was investigated. The electrochemical reduction of benzaldehyde was performed on zinc and zinc-mercury alloy coatings. The zinc coating was obtained by electrodeposition from a zinc sulphate bath. The amalgamated electrode was obtained by simple dipping the previously deposited obtained zinc coating into an aqueous solution of HgCl2. The overvoltage for hydrogen generation was higher on amalgamated electrodes than on non-amalgamated ones, which resulted in higher efficiencies of the electrochemical reduction of benzaldehyde. An increase in ethanol and benzaldehyde concentrations resulted in a decrease in cathode overvoltage and an increase in the efficiency of the electrochemical reduction of benzaldehyde. GC-MS analysis revealed cathodic conversion of benzaldehyde into both benzyl alcohol and hydrobenzoin and anodic conversion ibto benzoic acid.
