The paper discusses the change in the status of Balkan studies after 1989, as well as the role, meaning and place of stereotypes in these studies and discourses about the Balkans. In the first part of the paper, the history of the development of stereotypes and ideas about the Balkans is briefly outlined from the perspective of several disciplines, as well as the closely related terms balkanization and Balkan- ism. The second part of the text focuses on studies on the Balkans and, within them, doubts and aporias in the treatment of the phenomenon of stereotypes as constructed antonyms. Starting from the necessity of stereotypes in the thought economy, the interpretation focuses on the questioning and relativization of the antonymous structure of the discourse and the necessity of social contextualization and historicization of stereotypes in theoretical analysis rather than on the breakdown of the stereotype phenomenon in the sense of generalized or false ideas about oneself and others, near and far, known and unknown.
