ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:
The paper analyses how the ideas of the Enlightenment and of the absolutist state made an impact on the Serbs in the Habsburg Empire, and how, with the mediation of Habsburg Serbs, these ideas later fostered Europeanisation in the Principality of Serbia. The paper covers the timespan between the Council of Timișoara (1790) and the Annunciation Council (1861), focusing on the contributions of Stefan Stratimirović, Dositey Obradovich (Dositej Obradović), Božidar Grujović, Stefan Novaković and Sava Tekelija. Special attention has been given to the establishment of newspapers, reading rooms, high schools (gymnasia) and cultural and educational institutions among the Serbian community in the Habs- burg Empire, and to the dissemination of their ideas, concepts and manners to the Principality of Serbia.
