САЖЕТАК /ABSTRACT:

The aim of this paper is to highlight the significance of a multimodal approach to literary discourse analysis by applying the methods of a multimodal interpretation of the poems “Further Arrivals” by Margaret Atwood and “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus. The multimodal analysis entails both the structure and meaning of the poems, reflecting the topics of exile and immigration. The methodology is focused on the following key aspects: (1) a separate analysis of the data on the origin of the poems (personal views and ideologies of the authors), (2) the term immigration as a shared motif of the poems, and (3) modalities such as form, font and illustration that are in correlation with the authors’ views on immigration. The expected results offer an insight into a unique way in which these language modalities affect the readers’ overall impression and reflect the authors’ personal ideology. It is concluded that there is a significant correlation between the visual representation of the text (form and illustrations) and the meaningful discourse of the poems that allows us to decipher the authors’ point of view of exile and immigration.
