САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:

This paper presents an innovative technology for hydrogen generation based on highly preheated steam at 1200°C with energy from biomass. Biomass itself has relatively low hydrogen content, so in this process the H2 molecules come predominantly from steam. Another advantage is that the steam serves as the energy carrier for the process. In case of classical biomass gasification, when steam is added in order to increase hydrogen yield, additional energy input is required for the highly endothermic reactions with char and hydrocarbons. The whole reaction energy is supplied here by the sensible heat of steam, enabling an allothermal gasification process. The tests on the pilot  facility for up to 200 kg/h biomass have demonstrated high hydrogen yield. The excess steam in the syngas was very useful, as it enables an easier treatment of the tars. It was possible to use the fixebed counter-current reactor. It brings a crucial advantage to the economy of the process, as it is very tolerable towards the input biomass. Based on the experience and results of the pilot facility, a demoplant was designed with an input of 4 t/h dry biomass. It is able to achieve a hydrogen output of 400 kg/h. Waste gas from the PSA, called tail gas, has still an important amount of chemical energy whichis recuperated in the process, resulting in an overall energy efficiency of 70%. A new tool forcalculating the economy of the presented system has been developed. It is possible to calculate the price of generated hydrogen for desired internal rate of return (IRR). The production costs, are in the range 2.4 to 3.7 €/kg H2, depending on the input biomass price. That is the lowest cost on the European market for green hydrogen, including that for hydrogen imported from North Africa.
