ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

Timber structures in Serbia range from ancient vernacular techniques to modern mass timber systems. They are classified according to their structural system and historical context. Due to a lack of maintenance and prolonged neglect, many timber structures—spanning various ages, structural systems, and applied wood-based materials—now require renovation. The extent of these interventions depends on the condition assessment of each structure and its intended future use. Structural engineers working with timber must navigate evolving structural codes, insufficient equipment for modern non-destructive evaluation, and a lack of comprehensive data for successful NDT implementation. In addition, there is a prevailing perception that replacing timber with steel or concrete is easier and more cost-effective. This paper provides an overview of current codes, techniques, and practices for the assessment and rehabilitation of timber structures in Serbia, highlights the critical role of expert engineers, and aims to offer guidance and support in addressing common challenges.
