ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:
This paper presents the results of a visual–macroscopic inspection and investigative works carried out on the piers of the road–railway bridge over the Velika Morava River near Svilajnac. The original bridge was constructed in 1922 as part of war reparations. With the exception of pier S3, all piers are built of stone masonry blocks. The visual–macroscopic inspection revealed the presence of damage in the form of cracks and/or voids between the stone blocks, generally of limited extent and readily repairable. The investigative works included determining the foundation system of the piers both in water and on dry land, as well as identifying the material composition of the piers. The results showed that behind the stone cladding, approximately 90 cm thick, there is unreinforced concrete characterized by a significant presence of voids and discontinuities. No reinforcement was detected in any of the foundations. The foundations were constructed on dumped rock fill enclosed within sheet-metal caissons.
