The solo piano work Phrygian Gates (1977–78) by John Adams is often considered to be the composer’s first major postminimalist composition. It is written in a musical language that is both indebted to – and distinct from – the minimalism that preceded it. I first performed the work in 2000, and it remains one of the most challenging yet rewarding items in my repertoire. In this paper I will demonstrate how the performance practice challenges presented by Phrygian Gates are a consequence of its musical characteristics (both minimalist and otherwise). I will examine the work analytically and show how its analysis can inform its performance. Specifically, I will contend that analysis serves as an invaluable foundation for memorising Phrygian Gates, and I will present the analysis-based memorisation techniques I have used when performing the work.
