ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

Recently, the Republic of Serbia has started considerations of implementation of nuclear power as a measure for transformation of its power fleet currently dominated by aged and CO2 emitting lignite-fuelled power plants. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis and assessment of nuclear power plants in terms of the energy requirements of the Republic of Serbia is necessary. This accomplishment requires high level of competence in domain of efficient and safe use of nuclear power technologies. However, after 35 years of Memorandum on prohibition of nuclear energy use, the Republic of Serbia is a newcomer in this complex and sensitive field. Nevertheless, it is of substantial significance for the Republic of Serbia that the assessment of nuclear power technologies for future deployment is done by its national institutions. The paper intends to draw the attention of the main stakeholders in the Republic of Serbia to this burning issue. In that regard, the paper presents a simplified methodology for evaluation of the main players in nuclear power engineering of 21st century addressing the general question such as deployment of nuclear power plants, available reactor technologies, reactor technology suppliers, nuclear fuel supply and treatment of spent nuclear fuel.

KEYWORDS / KLJUČNE REČI:

Nuclear power engineering, reactor types and models, suppliers of reactor rechnologies, Uranium fuel, spent nuclear fuel
