SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:

The notion of “heritage” has two meanings. The first one is associated with sites of historical value preserved for the future generations. The second defines heritage as shared values and collective memories of  a nation – both necessary components of national identity – which require management by state institutions. Nationalism studies revealed that national compactness depends on the ability of states to provide official interpretations through appropriate institutions. Heritage, thus, becomes indispensable for the processes of “identity engineering.” This article identifies theoretical models which direct the creation of national narratives, always followed by the (mis)use of heritage in situ. Presented models analyse the interpretation of heritage through both historic and current case-studies.
