SAŽETAK /ABSTRACT:

The Sabah newspaper began to be printed in the Ottoman Empire on March 8, 1876 (11 Safer 1293). It was the first modern daily newspaper that reported to the public daily about political, cultural, and social events. The editor-in-chief of this newspaper was Shemsedin Sami, an Ottoman writer and philologist who often used the press to express his ideas and beliefs openly. Just after the Sabah newspaper began to be published, the uprising in Herzegovina in 1875 turned into a war between the Ottoman Empire on one side and Serbia and Montenegro on the other. Therefore, the Sabah newspaper featured not only social and cultural topics but also significant coverage of the uprising and war, the attitude of Europe and Russia towards the political turmoil in the Balkans, in addition to the author’s analysis of contemporary events. This study aims to analyze several articles from the Sabah newspaper published in 1876 to illustrate how the Ottoman press informed the public about the uprising in Herzegovina, its causes and consequences, as well as the conflict between the Ottomans and the Serbs. Given that the Sabah newspaper was published daily in 1876, this analysis focuses on select issues that reflect the political relations and public opinion of the time.
