SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:
In this study, the feasibility of using wood sawdust as a raw material for producing activated carbon (ACWS) was explored through a straightforward two-stage process of carbonization and chemical activation with ZnCl₂ as the activating agent. The goal of the research was to use the obtained carbon to remove cadmium ions (Cd²⁺) from aqueous solutions, aiming for more efficient wastewater treatment and environmental protection. Sorption efficiency (SE) and sorption capacity (qt) of the prepared ACWS were investigated under different conditions – pH value of the solution and sorbent dosage. The obtained results were compared with the ones measured for the commercial activated carbon (ACCOMM). The highest sorption capacities were measured at pH = 7, namely 33 mg g–1 for ACWS and 36.5 mg g–1 for commercial sorbent. The corresponding sorption efficiencies were 84.75 % and 91 %. By varying the sorbent dosage from 0.25 g L–1 to 5 g L–1, it was shown that the percentage of cadmium removal increases with the increase in the sorbent content. The highest efficiency was achieved at a sorbent dosage of 5 g L–1, amounting to 84.8 % and 91 % for ACWS and ACCOMM, respectively. The results indicate that activated carbon obtained from waste wood sawdust can effectively remove Cd2+, showcasing its potential for polluted water remediation.
