САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:

Waste biomass, rich in carbon, serves as an ideal source for producing activated carbon. This paper investigates the possibility of transforming wood sawdust to high-quality activated carbon through a relatively simple and efficient chemical activation using zinc chloride (ZnCl2). The synthesis process includes two subsequent temperature treatments: the first at 300 ℃ (biochar) and 700 ℃ (activated carbon). Precursor and the resulting products of temperature treatments are characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to investigate structural changes in the material that lead to pure carbon. FTIR spectra revealed that the typical lignocellulosic structure of the precursor sawdust does not significantly break down at 300 ℃. However, after annealing at 700 ℃, the material completely carbonizes and exhibits poor surface functionality according to the FTIR analysis. This approach contributes to the sustainable use of organic waste, giving as a final product a material of high value with a wide range of applications.
