SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:

This paper deals with two primary elements of popular culture – the war between the powerful and the subjugated and the popular reading of texts in the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s and its film adaptation through its main character. We argue that the heroine of the novella Holly Golightly belongs to the subjugated and employs all the characteristics of a popular reader. On the other hand, we discuss why alternations in her character in the film adaptation represent the tactic of the powerful by which they wanted to strip her of her authenticity with the agenda to impose desirable patterns of behaviour unto female viewers. Finally, we show the ways in which popular readers selectively and productively read the film and made their own version of Holly Golightly, resisting the powerful.
