ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:
The aim of the study is to explore the diversity of the professional-disciplinary field of spatial planning in the EU context. Deeply embedded in the socio-cultural, political and constitutional systems of countries, spatial and urban planning has developed in very different ways and forms, even within the EU. In the European higher education systems, planning appears in three different professional systems: in engineering and architecture, in social sciences, while in some cases it has long been a professional competence area in its own right, with its own disciplinary focus. The perspective and professional nature of planning is changing over time, from what was once a rather technical task to an increasingly broad social function. In addition to its architectural and technical character, its practice is increasingly taking on a socio-economic and geographical context, as well as an environmental science dimension. The paper draws on analyses of previous studies on the subject and on the author’s own survey. The new challenges and changing forms of design across Europe are challenging traditional professional systems, in particular the practice of design qualifications, which are seen as more future-proofed through a competency-based and less regulated approach.
