САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:

This paper discusses how bilingual lexical analysis can aid English Language Teaching (ELT) in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context in order to cultivate linguistic and cultural awareness. This bilingual approach has the potential to cultivate mediation skills between Japanese (L1) and English (L2), while developing increased linguistic and cultural sensitivity. This paper focuses on the lexical analysis of three words; “empathy,” “sympathy,” and “compassion” using parallel corpus in English and Japanese for the purpose of describing the similarities and differences in the usage and meanings elucidated based on corpus analysis and to examine the possible social influences and trends of these words. While this paper examines the differences of these three words in terms of word origin and meaning, a parallel corpus is used for this analysis with the aim of studying and generating a list of typical use cases. The paper concludes that these similar words have distinct differences in terms of their usage in a historical context related to historical trends in English and Japanese. By analyzing how these words can be a useful language learning and teaching tool, this paper suggests pedagogical advantages and implications of utilizing corpus based lexical analysis to increase language sensitivity and awareness in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context.
