SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:

Our paper sets out to explore various aspects of empathy in order to take a general understanding of its role in communication. More precisely, our paper examines the manifestation and dynamics of empathy in the correspondence between Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Rée, and Lou von Salomé through the lens of interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks, including Freudian psychoanalysis, Laing’s anti-psychiatry, Goffman’s sociological insights, and Nietzsche’s own philosophical reflections. More specifically, our study investigates how empathy is expressed, withheld, or interpreted in their letters. Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance theory is employed to uncover the inferential processes and contextual cues that guide the interpretation of emotional exchanges between Nietzsche, Rée, and von Salomé. Moreover, the relevance-theoretic framework reveals how the correspondents infer each other’s intentions and emotions through their letters. Empathy is communicated implicitly or explicitly, guided by expectations of relevance.
