SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:

Unstable in terms of genre and reception, the novel The Street of Ancestors (Ulica predaka), published in 1980, has kept Sunčana Škrinjarić pigeonholed as an author of children’s literature—both because of the child (non)hero Tajana and because of the book series in which it was published (the Jelen imprint of Mladost of Zagreb). The author herself has denied the autobiographical aspect, however, her unreliable heroine later “grew up” into a trilogy, joined by novels The Test of Maturity (Ispit zrelosti) published in 2002 and White Arrows (Bijele strijele) published in 2004. Their compatibility with the biography of Sunčana Škrinjarić suggests that Tajana is actually a “figure of reading” of the intimate and the public, of small family “wars” in the context of the Second World War, gender challenges and risks that the author has relocated to the third person of a mosaic narrative structure that redraws the boundaries of faction and fiction. It enables a mobility of identification that would not be possible in reality.
