ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:
Developing the thesis that changes in the portrayal of heroes in the arts are a clear indicator of changes in societies and their cultures due to external and internal influences, the paper traces the representation of heroes in the Serbian modern novel under the influence of European literature, i.e. European cultural transfer. Starting from the birth of the modern Serbian novel, the paper examines the changes in the portrayal of heroes in the works of numerous writers during its epochal development from the initial period to the period of Realism, the interwar period and the period of socialist Yugoslavia. In the final part of the paper, it is concluded that, during the two centuries of development, the Serbian novel was constantly influenced by European literary cultural transfer, summarising its epochal phases and directions and adapting its poetics and goals to its own cultural sensibility. The evolution of the representation of heroes is clearly visible: it moves from high mimetic, epic characters to low mimetic, more ordinary heroes, and on to anti-heroic existences placed in the center of the narrative, to postmodernism, where not only the hero but any sort of main protagonist disappears for the sake of the narrative or attempts to deconstruct it. Simplified forms of high mimetic and low mimetic heroes survived only in the genre novel, on its margins, continuing their lives in the post-Yugoslav period of Serbian literature.
