Folklore has played an important role in Serbian cultural history. Taken historically, as a field where different definitions, influences, projections and roles were imposed, folklore can be seen as an indicator of cultural dynamics between the Serbian and other European cultures. Serbian culture was influenced by Herderian ideas, but at the same time, the reception of Serbian folk poetry in Europe, primarily owing to the efforts of German intellectuals, became one of the ways to articulate European Pre-Romantic and Romantic sensibility. The success of early Serbian folklore collections was also an inspiration for other “small” European nations, and different conceptualisations of Serbian folklore circled back to Serbian intellectuals. In this way, folklore can be seen as an area of multilateral transfer. The exchange spans from the 18^th century (Italian and French receptions inspired by Ossianism) to Jacob Grimm and his European network to 20^th-century attempts to solve the “Homeric question”. Finally, these processes of reception themselves became part of research.
