ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

The Balkans are a part of Europe. Their modern original sin comes from the phrase “the powder keg of Europe”, defining the region as an explosive area. The area was indeed the apple of discord between the imperial Powers that had been vying for dominance in the region for over 400 years. Balkanisation is a similar term, which originally referred to the fragmentation of Eastern Prussia into the Baltic states – more aptly described as Balticisation. But the Balkans and their élites have their own political agency. This became obvious in the late 1980s and 1990s when political élites in Transylvania put an end to local conflicts, whereas Yugoslavia saw state-sanctioned mass murder.
