ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

This paper builds upon a previous study that presented the initial findings regarding the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices in the Greek graphic arts and printing industry (Korra, Giotopoulos, & Tsakanikas, 2018). In the context of an evolving global emphasis on sustainable development and responsible entrepreneurship, the current research expands the analysis to examine recent developments and emerging trends shaping CSR engagement within the sector. Particular attention is given to the new strategies being adopted, the shifting expectations of stakeholders, and the multifaceted challenges companies encounter while pursuing sustainability goals (MDPI, 2025).

The analysis is based primarily on secondary data derived from publicly available CSR and sustainability reports. These reports provide a robust foundation for understanding how Greek companies in the sector integrate CSR into their operational models (CSR Hellas, 2025). Key driving forces behind the adoption of CSR practices include stakeholder pressure (e.g., customers, suppliers, regulatory bodies), the strategic aim of enhancing corporate reputation, and the long-term recognition of environmental and economic benefits. At the same time, the study identifies persistent barriers, such as high initial investment costs, limited access to specialized knowledge, and the disconnect between theoretical frameworks and the practical implementation of CSR evaluation tools (Ecopier Solutions, 2023).

The research highlights the most prevalent CSR practices implemented in the industry: use of environmentally friendly materials, waste reduction initiatives, energy efficiency programs, support for local communities, and promotion of fair labor conditions. Moreover, emerging practices in smaller enterprises are examined, where innovative actions such as staff training, social contribution initiatives, and the alignment of CSR with business models are becoming more common (Δημοσθένους, 2018). These practices are shown to significantly contribute to the sustainability and competitiveness of businesses, particularly when supported by strategic planning and effective performance monitoring.

The paper also considers the influence of institutional developments at the European level, such as Directive 2014/95/EU and the more recent Directive 2022/2464/EU on ESG disclosures (MDPI, 2025). These regulations enhance the need for compliance while offering opportunities for strategic differentiation. In addition, the integration of digital monitoring tools for CSR performance enables improved transparency and impact assessment—factors that are increasingly critical for maintaining stakeholder trust and securing long-term value creation.

In conclusion, this contribution to the 26th International symposium in the field of pulp, paper, packaging and graphics aims to present not only the latest empirical insights into CSR implementation in the Greek graphic arts and printing sector but also to propose actionable policy and managerial recommendations. The paper outlines strategic directions for the integration of CSR into corporate identity and governance structures. By embedding CSR within core business strategy and fostering ongoing dialogue with stakeholders, the industry can achieve sustainable growth and strengthen its international positioning.
