САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:
Certain lifestyle factors such as physical activity and diet can affect a variety of health-related biomarkers and also impact the stability of DNA through the upregulation of the antioxidant defence system and alteration of its repair capacity. Besides, there is growing evidence suggesting that plant-based diets, as well as preferential consumption of fish and seafood, may promote health, longevity, and well-being. Hence, here we aimed to investigate the impact of different dietary preferences on the primary DNA damage in young healthy females residing in Zagreb (Croatia). The participants were divided into vegetarians and non-vegetarians, with the non-vegetarians further classified as either omnivores or pescatarians. The results showed significantly higher DNA damage in vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians, with the lowest DNA damage observed in pescatarians. Our results indicate that the pescatarian diet could be more beneficial in terms of maintaining DNA integrity and warrants further research in this particular area.
