САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:

The testing and development of an electro-thermal post-combustion system for single-room fireplaces is the focus of this article. The aim is to reduce carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and particulate matter of traditional single-room fireplaces, which typically have high emissions of pollutants, at least in some combustion phases. Those emissions are nowadays a problem for even wider use of wood for domestic heating, which is otherwise a renewable source of energy. The electro-thermal post-combustion system was tested in a fireplace available on the market. It was heated by an electric heating element to a temperature high enough to ignite the unburned gases and particles in the flue gas. The system was designed and optimized by placing ceramic plates with a heating wire passing through the plates and a prototype was built and assessed in a laboratory setting. The performance of the system was evaluated in terms of its ability to reduce CO and especially fine particles emissions, and maintain high temperatures. The results of the tests showed that the electro-thermal post-combustion system was able to reduce some emissions of CO and especially PM. The system was also able to provide high temperatures in the post-combustion chamber. During the normal operation of the furnace, temperatures reach up to 450-550 °C which is not enough for CO to burn completely. However, temperatures of 800°C are necessary for the complete combustion of CO.

Overall, the study demonstrates first steps towards the full potential for electro-thermal post-combustion systems to significantly reduce CO emissions and PM of single-room fireplaces, which can have a positive impact on air quality and renewable energy usage in residential settings.
