САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:

И поред чињенице да је месазонска служба готово једина која је систематски проучена и представљена још у прошлом веку, у науци  су и данас присутна опречна и подељена мишљења о њеној суштини. У нашем прилогу, пре свега филолошком анализом, а имајући у виду и историјски контекст, прослеђујемо употребу термина којим је означена посредничка служба у византијским изворима који су упутни за истраживање. Циљ анализе је да што потпуније и што тачније утврдимо значење назива μεσάζων (μεσιτεύον) ‘посредник’ како би добили што јаснију слику о самој функцији и тиме придонели у решавању дилема и непознаница која су остала до данас и око којих су мишљења истраживача и даље подељена.
