SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:
Ovaj rad propituje dominantne teorije identifikacije, simulacije i simpatije te pokazuje da nijedna ne može obuhvatiti čitav raspon publikinog emocionalnog i kognitivnog odnosa prema fikcijskim likovima. Analizom književnih i filmskih primjera – od Dickensovih Božićnih duhova i Cervantesova Don Quijotea do Batemana, DeLargea i apstraktnih entiteta poput Miltonova Boga – autor ističe tri kritična slučaja u kojima spomenute teorije zakazuju: antijunaci, neljudski ili konceptualni likovi te gubitak estetske vrijednosti pri isključivo psihološkom čitanju. Kao alternativu predlaže tumačenje likova i kao simboličkih/reprezentacijskih entiteta te razvija pet potkrepljujućih argumenata: (1) uklanjanje ograničenja tradicionalnih modela, (2) očuvanje estetske slojevitosti, (3) kontinuitet s povijesnom poetikom, (4) sinergiju afektivnog i konceptualnog angažmana te (5) teorijsku ekonomiju koja ujedinjuje realistične junake, groteske i kozmičke sile. Zaključno, rad pokazuje da simboličko čitanje, udruženo s psihološkom uvjerljivošću, pruža najpotpuniji opis naše interakcije s fikcijskim likovima i čuva raznolikost narativne umjetnosti.
