САЖЕТАК / ABSTRACT:
Sampling of tailings materials is a critical step in geotechnical investigations, as the quality and representativeness of specimens directly affect the reliability of results. No single method can meet all objectives; instead, different approaches provide complementary information when their strengths and limitations are recognized. This paper presents practical considerations and field experiences on how sampling strategies can be combined to improve the characterization of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). High-quality specimens are important for evaluating in-situ parameters such as density, water content, and soil fabric, but their recovery from loose, water-saturated tailings is often difficult. At the same time, lower-quality samples remain useful for classification, index tests, and mineralogical or chemical analyses. The paper emphasizes drilling methods, sampler selection, and handling procedures that enhance sample quality, and illustrates how results can be integrated with in-situ testing and geophysics to form a robust framework for assessing TSF risks, including liquefaction.
