ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL BASIS IN REFORESTATION OF DEFORESTED AREAS IN SERBIA

Artificial establishment of forest afforestation is a complex multidisciplinary activity of forest profession which includes and synchronies ecological, biotechnical, organizational and economic activities. In afforestation projects, the primary stage refers to the selection of species according to the ecological differentiation of the area for afforestation, planning of its future purpose and measuring and calculation of expenses for economical sustainable implementation of all works. The success of afforestation in the field will be increasingly uncertain, because the climate and degradation changes and make the sites intended for afforestation in Serbia even more dificult and demanding from the aspect of site preparations. Maximal reduction in the unfavorable effects of these limiting factors, can be achieved only by specific-purpose production of the conditioned planting stock. The term »specific-purpose planting stock«, refers to seedling production, propagated primarily from seeds, which will be characterized by the properties favorable for the predetermined silvi-technical works in forestry. Based on the exact data, available maps and surveys, by applying the methods of forestry typology all further activities at the level of potential forest vegetation are defined. The paper presents the results and economic justification of multi decades of activities of scientific and professional staff of the Institute of Forestry in Belgrade on reforestation of different types and degrees of degradation of terrain in Serbia.
