ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

In recent years, the integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, En-
gineering, Arts, and Mathematics) into education has gained signif-
icant attention. However, its implementation in language classes re-
mains a topic of debate. This study, authored by two English language
teachers, explores the potential of STEAM in enhancing language
learning and teaching.
We conducted an ecology project Deco–Mat (material decomposi-
tion): Unmasking Waste Materials with 12-13-year-old students,
utilizing project-based learning and STEAM approach. The aim was
to examine how STEAM can be effectively integrated into language
lessons to foster 21st century skills. Our approach involved engaging
students in hands-on experiments and practical activities involving
all STEAM areas. Investigating the environmental impact of waste
through decomposition research, and using digital tools to design
posters and presentations, the students developed public speaking
skills while raising community awareness about recycling. They
also applied mathematics to predict the environmental impact of
plastic waste in their school, fostering real-world problem-solving.
Additionally, students repurposed waste into decorations and games,
demonstrating creative reuse practices. The integration of multiple
disciplines enhanced their ability to make connections across sub-
jects and improve their English language skills.
