ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

Soviet writers actively attempted to incorporate the major figures of 19th-century Russian literature into the canon of Soviet prose, but Ivan Turgenev proved singularly difficult to assimilate. In his 1958 breakthrough story “Jamila”, however, Chingiz Aitmatov was able to meld key elements of “thaw-era” literature with Turgenev’s sentimentalism and lyricism to produce a text that helped pave the way for the Village Prose movement that would appear in the mid-1960s.
