ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

The main thesis of the article is that a metric form of the text has obvious semiotic consequences: it incorporates this text into broad cultural contexts that determine its semantic value. In the case of translating a verse text into another language, the translator transfers this text from one semiotic tradition to another, and also the verse form of the poem forces various mutations to be made. The use of the verse form brings a structural surplus in the sphere of text organization and introduces a certain additional meaning (described as “metametric function” by Svetozar Petrović). In my article I analyze more closely two Polish translations of Psalm 42: 1) a translation made in the sixteenth century by Jan Kochanowski, who used the Saphite stanza, incorporating the translated psalm into the song tradition of European Renaissance poetry; 2) translation made in Bible verse by contemporary poet – Czesław Miłosz. A precise juxtaposition of these two texts reveals significant differences in the linguistic material used in the two versions and their different location in cultural contexts. The regular rhyming syllabic form 11/11/11/5 used by Kochanowski required the use of many additional words to maintain the rhythm. The function of these rhythmic additions is performed primarily by adjectives, and these added epithets modify the stylistic character of the text.
