ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:

Contemporary literary criticism so heavily privileges the social context of literature that failing to acknowledge the extent to which literary forms are shaped by social conventions has come to be regarded as a cardinal sin.

Yet, medieval and early modern literature bring another fact to light – literary works are not simply defined by social conventions – they establish them.

The ways in which they do so are rhetorical in nature. In this section, I will attempt to outline some major traits of Slavic medieval encomiastic literature, with the principal aim to show how medieval rhetoric, as a vehicle for the transmission of values,1 has an impact on public opinion and partakes in the very process of identification.
