ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:
Maclura pomifera is a plant that holds a significant value among people throughout the world and history. It represents the pioneering plant specie that is resilient to many harsh conditions, while also being easily adaptable to variety of soil types and habitats. Many authors suggest that it can be and that its actively used for treating many health conditions – based on the content of natural antioxidants (polyphenols). The aim of this paper was to evaluate the antioxidant potential and polyphenol content of two traditionally prepared ethanol extracts of Maclura pomifera with common laboratory assays and find the answer to this very crucial question. Obtained results show high free radical scavenging activity (DPPH: 0.0232 and 0.0223 mg TE/mL, ABTS: 0.0061 mg TE/mL), high total polyphenol content (0.0130 and 0.0373 mg GA/mL) as well as total reducing power (0.0365 and 0.0639 mg AE/mL), followed by FRAP and CUPRAC with significant results (0.0193 and 0.0305 mg Fe(II)/mL; 0.0226 and 0.0426 mg TE/mL respectively). Presented results all go in favour of great potential of this plant for use in traditional medicin
