ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:

Environmentally friendly and sustainable construction imposes requirements for optimal use of resources. There is an increasing number of requests to extend the operational life of existing facilities or to convert existing facilities, with minimal use of energy and resources. This trend is recognised globally. Great attention is being paid to developing guidance, recommendations, and standards for the reuse or retrofitting of existing structures. The first step in this work is the assessment of the steel structure. In the last ten years, publications have appeared that provide engineers with basic guidelines for the assessment of steel structures. It is expected that the new edition of Eurocodes for structures will provide a common framework for the assessment and retrofitting of structures. However, it is necessary to adapt recommendations and practices to local traditions. In addition to the general principles, the paper presents two characteristic examples of old steel structural elements found in almost every industrial building in Serbia, built between 1970 and 1980. There are some suggestions that exist for the assessment of steel structures. Some of these proposals have grown into recommendations that guide engineers in their work.
