ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:
Approximately 2,200 bridges over water and land carry automobile, train, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic through the five boroughs of New York City, spreading over three islands and into the American mainland. Over their 400-year history of sustaining and stimulating each other, that infrastructure network and the City have integrated organically into the largest metropolis on the continent. The article presents some of the many examples illustrating both unique and generally valid engineering and management solutions developed during this process.
