ABSTRACT / САЖЕТАК:
This paper discusses the condition assessment, reliability, durability, and maintenance of civil engineering structures, with particular emphasis on structures exposed to degradation processes during service life. Basic concepts related to reliability, service life, maintenance, rehabilitation, and strengthening of structures are analysed, together with modern facility management approaches based on probability theory and statistics. Special attention is given to methods for assessing the reliability of existing structures, including probabilistic models, reliability functions, and probability of failure. The principles of monitoring, condition assessment, and maintenance of structures are presented, together with the effects of degradation processes caused by environmental actions, loading, and material ageing. Preventive, corrective, and condition-based maintenance strategies are analysed, as well as the importance of databases and management systems in planning interventions and extending structural service life. Particular attention is devoted to bridges as structures of special importance due to their exposure to aggressive environmental actions and high requirements regarding safety and durability. It is concluded that modern reliability-based approaches enable more rational facility management, reduction of maintenance costs, and improvement of the safety and durability of civil engineering structures.
