ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:
Mount Athos, known as the Holy Mountain, has long been regarded as a unique microcosm of Orthodox monastic life. Since at least the 10th century, this rugged peninsula in northern Greece has attracted monks from various regions, including Constantinople, the Caucasus, the Danubian principalities, the Balkans, and beyond.1 Historical sources consistently highlight the fact that, while each monk was primar-ily defined by his spiritual commitment to the Orthodox faith, ethnic differences persisted in many practical dimensions of monastic life. Such differences were often reflected in the establishment of monasteries dedicated to a particular linguistic community, and in the production and circulation of legendary narratives that aimed to explain foundations, miraculous phenomena, and special devotions.
