ABSTRACT / SAŽETAK:
In the production of paper and paperboard, starch is used to improve mechanical and physicochemical properties, or, in general, to improve quality. One of these properties is SCT (“Short-Span Compression Test”), which represents the ability of paper packaging material to withstand mechanical crushing. However, excessive use of starch, leads to significant costs and inefficient use of resources. By developing a virtual sensor for measuring SCT values, it is possible to precisely monitor SCT values during paper production, and by applying advanced optimization techniques, starch consumption can be reduced to a minimal level, while still producing the desired paper type and in accordance to TAPPI standard T1826. The practical results of the application in the DS Smith Belišće factory, presented in this paper, show promising potential for cost reduction and increasing resource efficiency in the paper industry.
