Farmakološke karakteristike kompleksa zlata poznate su još od kraja 19. veka. Ova jedinjenja najčešće su korišćena u lečenju reumatoidnog artritisa. Poslednjih decenija kompleksi zlata su ispitivani zbog raznolikosti primene, koja pre svega obuhvata upotrebu kao potencijalnih antikancerogenih i hemioterapeutskih agenasa. Zlato(III) kompleksi, zbog sličnosti sa kompleksima platine, su pokazali obećavajuće antikancerogene, citotoksične i antitumorske karakteristike.
U okviru ovog rada ispitivane su interakcije kompleksa zlata (III), [Au(DPP)Cl2]+ i [Au(DMP)Cl3] kompleks (gde je DPP=4,7-difenil-1,10-fenantrolin i DMP=2,9-dimetil-1,10-fenantrolin) i SARS-CoV2 proteaze. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da kvadratno-planarni [Au(DPP)Cl2]+ kompleks pokazuje dobru inhibitornu aktivnost, u odnosu na FDA odobrene lekove, cinanserin i hlorokin.
