SAŽETAK / ABSTRACT:
In this paper, the author examines specific points of convergence and perspectives shared by St. Maximus the Confessor, who draws upon Plato’s tripartite division of the soul—τὸ λογιστικόν, τὸ θυμοειδές, τὸ ἐπιθυμητικόν, while emphasizing the distinct ontological perspectives of these two approaches through the Christian reception of Platonic ideas. The author identifies psychological elements within Christianity that emerged in monastic circles, where spiritual work was directed toward self-knowledge as a form of psychoanalytic process. From this perspective, the author explores Freud’s psychoanalysis and its metapsychological structural model, which bears intriguing similarities and divergences in relation to Plato’s and Maximus’ proposed tripartition. This analysis highlights a certain connection to contemporary psychoanalytic assumptions and dominant perspectives on the human psyche throughout history. The use of a tripartite description of human psychical structure, found in Plato, St. Maximus the Confessor, and Sigmund Freud, arises from distinct and temporally distant contexts. However, it may, at least to some extent, offer a conceptual bridge between these great thinkers and philosophical seekers. The paper serves as an introduction to the author’s further reflections on the psychotherapeutic background of interactive psychoanalysis, aiming to explore perspectives that could lead to more universal understandings of human nature and therapeutic approaches.
